Joy

I had a truly wonderful evening at TLR last night. I apologize to everyone who could make it for getting monetarily waylaid by RL during my set. I hope it was enjoyable!

I am so happy with the new location! So many thanks again to Crap Mariner for making this space available.

I hope that your December is full of happiness and joy, and all the best things that accompany the holiday season – whatever your tradition may be. And I also hope that we will see you at The Listening Room, both during the holiday season and in the new year!

Gypsy Quixote Plays TLR’s First Live Set!

The Listening Room had a very wonderful surprise guest this weekend – the amazing guitarist/vocalist Gypsy Quixote!  With a voice and a style that is reminiscent of the mighty Tom Waits, Gypsy enthralled the audience (including yours truly) with a mesmerizing set.  I sincerely hope that I can announce in the future his return to the TLR stage.  If you’re a Twitterer, you can follow him at @gypsyquixote – and if you do, please let him know that you can’t wait to see him again at The Listening Room!

Big Changes at The Listening Room!

I am happy to announce The Listening Room’s grand re-opening!

We are now on the Edloe sim, which is part of the Five Islands.  We are now “deep underground” – literally – our new space is located inside of a mountain.

Why the move?  There was one primary reason – performance.  TLR’s previous sim had become very script-heavy, which had a detrimental effect on the overall experience and enjoyment of TLR for both DJs and guests.  Attendance and participation suffered as a result.

A lesser concern, but a concern nonetheless, was the rating of the sim – which was G (formerly PG).  I’ve made it a point to never ask DJs to censor their sets at TLR, even though this left us vulnerable to abuse reports for inappropriate content.  I regularly scanned the Moderate-rated regions of Bay City for a possible alternate site, but found those plots priced entirely out of consideration.

When Crap Mariner offered the space in Edloe for TLR to move, it was not a decision I made quickly or without deliberation.  For me, a key to running TLR was “democracy within autonomy” – full control of the ‘physical’ space has always been a necessary part of operating TLR in a democratic manner.  Crap, however, has been one of the strongest, most consistent and most enthusiastic supporters of The Listening Room since the beginning – which gave me the reassurance I needed to accept his offer without reservation.

What does moving to The Five Islands mean for TLR?  First and foremost – the new space is virtually lag-free!  No more having to apologize to guests that it might take at least ten minutes for everything and everyone to load fully.  This is paramount to me.

The Listening Room is all about the overall experience, whether there are three people in attendance or thirty.  Gezelligheid is the key.  General consensus so far indicates that the new TLR is truly gezellig, which makes me happier than you can possibly imagine.

I hope that you will come and visit us in our wonderful new space.

It began as a very simple idea – I needed a place to drag people together when instant messages got out of hand. A place to play music for others in comfortable surroundings. A place I could fit around my schedule. A place where I could simply have fun again.

When Bay City expanded in early 2011, I purchased a parcel for my store and set about expanding my business. When additional parcels went to auction, I purchased a second without a real plan – I just knew that Bay City Westside was a good place to become established.

It seemed like a perfect fit. The Listening Room was born.

In the rush to be seen, to be relevant, to be profitable – we often lose sight of what makes Second Life such a wonderful experience – having fun.

I nearly lost sight of it myself.

The Listening Room is a social space with an terrific soundtrack. It has no staff, only a group of friends – established DJs and those learning the ropes – who schedule time to come in when they choose, practice, try new things and play what they like.

When nobody’s in the DJ booth, the venue streams live music from excellent stations like The Current from Minnesota Public Radio and Oklahoma City’s The Spy. There’s always a relaxed space with good music for you to enjoy, day or night.

Bring your partner. Bring your friends. Just leave your gestures at home. Thanks!
